Karen Gillan is as cool as a cucumber in her full Nebula costume and makeup in a new behind the scenes picture from Guardians of the Galaxy. Over the course of four MCU movies, Gillan's Nebula has become one of the franchise's most complex characters. She started off as a villain in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, serving under the orders of Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). However, through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, Nebula gradually turned into an anti-hero, only to finally become the MVP of Avengers: Endgame. She played a key role in the final battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) and thus saved the entire universe.
There's a good chance that Nebula's MCU journey will come to an end with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Currently set for release in 2023, the movie is now in production and will see the returns of virtually every major Guardians cast member. James Gunn is back as director following a brief firing. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but by all accounts, it sounds like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be an emotional sendoff for several characters.
November 28 is Gillan's birthday, and Gunn made sure to commemorate the day by sending his well-wishes to her on social media. "Happy Birthday to the purely positive, incredible, dualistic personality that is @karengillan," Gunn wrote in the post, which features two BTS pictures of Gillan. One of them looks to be from the first Guardians of the Galaxy and finds the actress chilling out on set while in her full costume. You can see the full post below.

Not too long ago, Gunn declared on social media that if Oscars were awarded based on how well an actor could deviate from their normal personalities, Gillan would've won 4 for playing Nebula. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast is filled with talented performers who have all managed to bring distinctive characters to life, but there's no question that Gillan stands among the very best of them. Those familiar with her work on Doctor Who and in the Jumanji franchise know Nebula is a very different ballgame for the actress, and she nails her perfectly.
Nebula has already enjoyed an exciting character arc throughout the MCU, but the final Guardians of the Galaxy can take it a step further. It's been said that Vol. 3 is Nebula and Gamora's story, which means Gillan should get even more opportunities to stretch her acting chops. It'll be exciting to see what Gunn has in store for her, though fans sadly still have to wait well over a year to see those plans in action. In the meantime, happy birthday, Karen!
